In some healthy persons a loss of pigment occurs in certain sharply limited areas of the skin, including the hands and face. The involved areas look white in contrast to the surrounding areas of normally colored skin. This cosmetic defect is more noticeable, of course, in persons with dark complexions. The cause is not understood; and there is no satisfactory treatment.

The rate and depth of a person's breathing are automatically controlled in relation to the body's need of oxygen. When the tissues do not receive enough oxygen, breathing is stimulated. Also when carbon dioxide accumulates in the tissues, breathing is stimulated. Either of these situations results in the attempt to breathe deeply and rapidly at the same time. This we call "shortness of breath." ...
