Fainting



FaintingFainting is a temporary loss of consciousness. It commonly results from a reduction in the blood supply to the brain. For a discussion of its causes, see chapter 16, "List of Signs and Symptoms,"

WHAT TO DO
Place the victim in a horizontal position with the feet elevated slightly above the level of the body. Apply cold water or a cold compress to face and head. Clothes fitting tightly at the neck or waist should be loosened. If available, hold an open bottle of aromatic spirits of ammonia to the patient's nose. I fun consciousness lasts more than a minute or two, call a doctor. Meanwhile, keep the patient covered warmly. In the usual case, the patient will regain consciousness quickly. He may have a headache for a while. Keep him warm and in a reclining position for an hour or so.
