Poisons by Ammonia

Ammonia is kept commonly about the house as a cleaning agent. When ammonia is swallowed, it causes burning of the mouth, of the esophagus, and of the stomach, followed by thirst and nausea. The fumes of strong ammonia, when blown in the face or when inhaled, cause severe irritation of the membranes of the eyes, throat, and air passages.

WHAT TO DO
Ammonia is a powerful irritant and corrosive. Follow PROCEDURE C on this post. When the fumes have irritated the eyes, wash eyes freely while holding the lids open and using several quarts of water. Afterward, pain may be soothed by placing a few drops of dilute boric acid solution beneath the eyelids.
