Poisons by DDT and other Chlorinated Organic Insecticides

This class of insecticides includes many used in the garden and on the farm such as aldrin, benzene hexachloride, chlordane, DDE, DDT, DFDT, dieldrin, heptachlor, lindane, methoxychlor, and toxaphene. These can cause poisoning by being taken into the mouth, by being inhaled, or by direct contact with the skin. Although very few persons die of these poisons, they do cause damage to the brain and to the liver. Poisoning by these insecticides causes aching limbs, nervous irritability, slowing of the thought processes, twitching of the muscles, convulsions, and unconsciousness.

WHAT TO DO
If the poison has been taken by mouth, have the victim drink three or four glasses of warm water and then induce vomiting by a finger in the throat. Repeat this several times to rinse the stomach. Avoid using cathartics, oily preparations of any kind, or epinephrine (adrenalin). When paralysis of respiration occurs, give artificial respiration. It is advisable to hospitalize the victim so that a physician can give proper medication to control convulsions and to prevent damage to the liver
